Where can I find the driver for the drive? Interestingly, sometimes the Driver stack used for this purpose can become corrupted or otherwise encounter problems.The Driver stack for the Optical Drive can be refreshed from device manager. 1. If you remove something like a USB key or MP3 player, Windows will remove the temp drive, and the directory will default to the next directory on the list. It seems to be more a problem with Windows than the drive itself. Maybe not virtual drive software, but other CD/DVD apps (like Nero or whatever) that hook into the AutoPlay stuff?

As with XP it was time to rebuild the system anyway so I reformated C and reloaded XP. Deborah says she scanned for viruses, checked for updated drivers, and ran Windows' DVD troubleshooter--all smart steps, but all to no avail. If it is simply only readong CD-ROM discs than it is definitely what Geek-pm mentioned- a failure of one of the lasers. And it still runs/read/burns fine.
