I have seen some disks that were damaged by the laser raising up to read the disk and and actually impacting the disk surface in the process. I have played retail movies recently. Everything was included in the original box and sealed inside plastic pouches, so I believe I was the first user. So this must be a Vista bug.
I've never used a Linux live disc. It can obviously see the "pits" of a "gouged" DVD. I haven't run any window updates and mine was working fine until a couple of weeks ago? I also don't know what you mean by "its ID"?
